Objective
This article describes how to publish specific drives and folders as it is not recommended to publish Explorer.exe directly.
Notes:
- Microsoft does NOT?? recommend running Explorer.exe as a published application because the published Explorer.exe application runs as a separate process with restricted access to the desktop.
- The method of copying and renaming the Explorer.exe to, for example, Explorer2.exe is a widely used method but not a suggested or supported method by the Citrix Development Team.
When doing this, there might be other issues, for example, session becomes unresponsive or becomes slow when starting several instances of the renamed Explorer2.exe. These issues are the result of internal Explorer.exe dependencies that cannot be resolved without rewriting a large parts of the operating system kernel.
Instructions
Citrix suggests one of the following methods:
Method 1
If you have Internet Explorer?? installed on your server, you can publish an application with the following command line:<path to IEXPLORE.EXE>\IEXPLORE.EXE [–e <Initial drive/directory>|<URL>] (specify %windir% for the working directory).
Example:
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -e c:\
Or??
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://www.citrix.comNote: The -e switch does not work with Internet Explorer 7 and or later versions since Microsoft has phased out several command line options for iexplore.exe.
For more information on the changes to Internet Explorer, see Separation of Internet Explorer 7 from the Windows shell.
If you have Internet Explorer 7 and or later versions installed on your server, you can publish an application with the following command line:<path to IEXPLORE.EXE>\IEXPLORE.EXE [<Initial drive>].
Example:
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" c:\.
Method 2
Publish the share as content in the Citrix console using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) address \\computername\foldershare with permission to view or execute as required.Method 3
Publish Firefox.exe or Chrome.exe with a defined share path to attain a similar experience.Example:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe \\comptername\foldershare
Method 4
Use a third party file management utility that has been tested in your environment.Example For Share Folder
